Studio +

Studio + is part of Vital Regeneration’s youth music provision and is made up of practical courses and taster sessions in youth centres in Brent and Hammersmith & Fulham. Young people use industry-standard equipment to write and produce music, and they learn about how to progress into careers in the creative media industry.

Studio + also offers events management courses where young people in teams put on live music events. The work that goes into this gives them practical experience of relationship-management, budgeting, marketing and more. The events are also opportunities for young people to gain exposure for their music.
The Studio + Key Worker and team take a holistic approach to helping young people on Studio +. As well as providing Music training, Studio + gives them support to move out of situations that make it hard for them to study. Studio + refers young people onto further education and training courses and helps them find trainee placements and paid work.
‘Whilst learning new skills in the music trade I also got to
experiment with different types of music’ Aleesia, Studio + participant
The courses are unique in offering literacy support through the help of a friendly basic skills tutor and young people can also gain music technology and literacy qualifications.
Studio+ aims to engage young people who wouldn’t take part in learning activities otherwise, and to support them to return to education, training and employment in a field of their choosing.
The courses act to increase confidence and self-esteem and aim to divert young people from getting involved in anti-social or criminal behaviour.
‘I think Studio + is a big step for people wanting to take music seriously’, Tyson, Studio + participantSome of the young people who complete Studio+ courses will be selected to carry out trainee placements as digital media learning support tutors or youth workers.
Studio+ is a project funded by London West Learning and Skills Council, (European Social Fund) and South Kilburn New Deal For Communities. It is run in partnership with Kilburn Youth Centre, the City of Westminster College and North Fulham New Deal For Communities.
