Entertainment Lawyer Masterclass

In September 2008, leading London Entertainment Lawyer, Tony Martino gave up his time to give a masterclass to Studio+ students. He spoke to an audience of 12 about:

  • different careers you can get into linked into music,
  • things you should do to be successful in the industry,
  • the best approach to getting your music out there, and
  • what to look out for if signing up to a contract.

He also offered his services ongoing as a mentor to all Studio+ students - to give them advice about pitfalls to look out for breaking into the music Industry etc and about getting hooked up to the right networks.

One Hit Wonders Team-Building Day

On May 2nd, Vital Regeneration took part in One Hit Wonders, a brand new team-building day run by Studio+. Staff formed teams and competed to produce an original song and CD to take home in the space of a day. One group named themselves Tulula Ripley and the Pixies and the other group produced a funky-house track about being trapped in a maze.

 

One participant said the day was "absolutely brilliant" and another thought it was "like Songstar but better!".

Studio+ Showcase in Hammersmtih Town Hall

The Studio + and NDC Film Project showcase took place on Saturday, 29th March at Hammermsith Town Hall. Films made by young people about growing up in Fulham were premiered, and guests were able to listen to music composed by young people from the Studio+ project on wireless headphones.

 

There was a photo gallery documenting the work of student s on the Studio+ Events Management course, and an award ceremony, where young people were rewarded for their achievements.

Studio+ Sound Engineering at City of Westminster College

Studio + and the City of Westminster College ran a joint Music Production course in spring 2008. This free course took producers' skills one stage further by giving them experience of using Pro Tools software, and by teaching them how to enhance their music with high qualities recordings and mastering.

Live Radio Show

On the 8th January 2008, the Studio+ team did a radio show with DJ Pugwash at South Kilburn FM. Past learner Glen Ranger talked about his experiences on the Events Management and Production courses he'd been on with Studio+, and Pugwash played tracks produced by Studio + learners, Feyesha Wakjira, Ranique Edwards, Ashleen Scobie and Glen Ranger.

Crowd at 'Off Limitz' event

"Off Limitz"

On the 8th December 2007, 5 young people from Studio+'s Events Management course in North Fulham, put on their Off Limitz events promoting positive futures, at the Harrow Club in Ladbroke Grove. The event was a sell-out success, with performances from L Dot Kizzle and great sets by DJs such as DJ Medicz.

Recording Studio Sessions

On the 4th December, Zaaran and Gee from South Kilburn, recorded and mastered a track they had produced on the Studio+ Fast Tracks course, at the Granville Centre's recording studio.

Canal Boat Trip

On the 30th October, young people on the London Dreaming course spent an afternoon learning to navigate a narrow boat through locks and under tunnels along the Regents Canal. They then spent a month using I Movie to edit the footage they shot of the day, using Logic to produce music for the soundtrack.

Trainee Youth Workers

7 young people from Studio+ studied towards a Level 2 VRQ course in Youth Work at Kilburn Youth Centre in conjunction with the George Williams College in 2007-2008. As part of this course they carried out trainee placements at local youth clubs and schools in order to get practical experience of working with young people.

DJing at Capital City Academy

Studio + worked with Capital City Academy in 2007-2008, delivering DJing taster sessions every Tuesday afternoon. These were really well-attended and y well received by students at the school. Similar sessions, with additional Music Production drop in sessions also took place at the Brunswick Club in North Fulham on Friday nights.

Literacy Qualifcations

Feyesha Wakjira and Anthony Lake gained Level 1 Adult Literacy Qualifications at the City of Westminster College in September 2007. They studied for these qualifications though literacy exercises embedded in their Music Production classes. Laura Audi-Stubbins and Alessia Thompson, who got these qualifications last January, went on to get their Level 2 Adult literacy Qualifications too. Well done!

End of Summer Party

Studio+ took part in North Fulham's Normand Park 'End of Summer Party' on September 1st 2007. Huge crowds watched electric performances by Lady Xtra, Brother Niyi and EL Crisis in the Youth Tent and people of all ages took part in Music Production workshops, and Open Mic sessions with the Studio+ tutors and volunteers.

"Last of the Summer Wine"

'Last of the Summer Wine', a spectacular night of OldSkool Garage, Funky House, Rare Groove and R&B, took place in the Long Rooms on September 7th 2007. The event was managed from start to finish by young people on the Studio+ Live course. It was a resounding success with around 250 people there on the night and event costs more than being covered by ticket sales on the door.

 

There was live performances by the incredibly professional and slick, R'n'B trio, 'Khy', and home-grown talent, Lady Xtra, with her ever-witty lyrics, and the tunes played by DJs Turbo, Smooth, Fever and Glenroy Ranger, filled the dance floor right from the start.

Brunwsick Club Taster Sessions

Studio + taster sessions took place over in August 2008 at the Brunswick Club in Fulham. Young people came along to the sessions and were taught to use Logic 7 software to make their own tunes.

Studio+ Meets Blur

The Studio+ showcase event to celebrate the achievements of our students took place on 2nd August 2007 at Kilburn Youth Centre. It was an opportunity to present the music created in various Studio+ courses and to award the certificates and qualifications the students had worked towards.

 

The film that was produced in the ‘London Dreaming’ course was projected onto a big screen with the students’ beats playing underneath as the soundtrack to this journey across London.

 

The Studio+ ‘Mix It Up’ session was also in full flow as it was a Thursday evening. Mix it up tutor Ashely (DJ Turbo) proved his talent on the decks by playing an outstanding live set, and then went on to show his teaching skills encouraging everybody to get involved and try their hand at DJing.

Sky Fest in South Kilburn

Dewellyn, Aleesia and Laura spent the day at SKFM’s Sky Fest in South Kilburn Open Space spreading the word about the Studio+. We hear they met lots of enthusiastic young people who were keen to get involved!

Chinatown and Greenwich Trip

In June 2007 everyone from Studio+ went on a film and sound recording expedition into London. They cruised along the Thames on a riverboat, ran through the underwater tunnel at Greenwich, and relaxed over lunch in Chinatown.
